Can You Wear Out Your Body?

From Mark Stibich, Ph.D., About.com Guide   April 4, 2007

This theory of aging looks at the body from a mechanical perspective. The idea is that certain parts of the body just wear out due to use and time. Much like a machine, the parts simply don't work as well. This causes the signs of aging and, eventually, a break-down in the body's systems.

The theory doesn't fully explain aging. People who don't use their bodies much (couch potatoes) have a lower life expectancy that people who do more exercise. The body is also continually making repairs and building new cells and tissues. Because of this continual renewal in the body, it is not clear what is "wearing out."
