Book Review Friday: The China Study or Why Vegetarians Live Longer

Author T. Colin Campbell has spent 40 years researching nutrition and health to become one of the leading experts in the field. Unlike every diet book out there, The China Study is filled with research, tables and statistics. Many of these researcher findings are from Dr. Campbell's landmark "China Study" that explained why people in different regions of China have different rates of chronic illness. The answer? Vegetables.

In rural China, people eat very little animal-based foods. These people get less cancer, heart disease and generally live without chronic illness. Through his research both with experimental studies sing rats and large epidemiological studies, Dr. Campbell concludes that animal protein increases your risk for chronic illness.

If the research data isn't convincing enough itself, Dr. Campbell himself (and his whole family) became vegetarians because of this research.

I studied Chinese at Shandong University in Jinan 1984-1985 and Chinese Traditional Music in Beijing 1992-1993. I am very interested about the connection between diet and health and like any of you reading this post I am always reading conflicting advice on how to eat and drink. I eat a very high carbohydrate diet (with butter), I genuinely cannot stomach more than a certain amount of animal food. My favourite main meal is rice and dall/vegetables (Very spicy). Anyway…

I can tell you that it is true the Chinese people eat very large portions of rice and noodles…they eat more vegetables in one day than most Westerners eat in a month and…. unlike the impression you may get from this book they eat as much meat and poultry as they possibly can!! Chinese people love food and what is wrong with that!

I prefer to eat a low protein diet myself but I have to tell you that this book is portraying a very false picture of the Chinese way of eating. Dishes are stir fried in lots of oil or lard , not the small amount that Western cookbooks say. Salt, msg (which is happily used in all Asia without mysterious syndromes) and other seasonings are used in large amounts because that is what makes food palatable.

By the way, if you go to Spain where people supposedly eat another American invention called “The Mediterranean Diet” you will find that most people drink as much wine, beer and spirits as they can or want to… they eat lots of salami, ham, smoked or preserved fish, meats, poultry and fried vegetables, very oily salads and are still in a better state of health than the Americans and British.

Foods that have undergone the minimum alteration before sale whether it be vegan, vegetarian or standard diet seems to be the recurring theme in good nutrition.

Oh No!! The processing of food … let’s leave that for another day.

If you know someone around you who is being a little shady and you are getting uncomfortable around them, then maybe you might want to run a small background report on the person in question to make sure that they are ‘who they say they are’.

Many people misrepresent themselves as the situation benefits them
