Hara Hachi Bu and Live Longer
Monday October 8, 2007
Hari Hachi Bu is Japanese for something like "eat until you are 80% full" and it is the secret of longevity practiced by the Okinawans (the longest lived group of people in the world). Hara Hachi Bu is a cultural tradition of eating, not until you are full, but until you are 80% full. Over a lifetime this means far fewer calories.
How does Hara Hachi Bu lead to longer life?
Besides the obvious reason - maintaining a health weight - researchers into life extension have shown that rats and mice can live significantly longer if they eat less calories (called calorie restriction). This makes a lot of sense - the less you eat, the less your body metabolizes, the less waste produced (e.g. free radicals), the less damage done to your body.
Try Hara Hachi Bu for a few days this week. You shouldn't feel hungry, just satisfied with less.

“the less waist produced…”
Great, if unintended pun!
