Running and Aging - Running Helps Healthy AgingRunning Helps Healthy Aging

Friday August 22, 2008
I'm going to try to focus on good news around aging for a while. It seems like there is study after study coming out saying that this or that is bad for you. I'm going to work hard the next few weeks to find evidence for things that are good for you as you age. Here's the first one: Running.

Sure, we know that running is a good form of exercise. But I've also heard from people that you shouldn't run too long, that's it's bad on your knees, etc. etc. Here is some evidence that runners have not only live longer, but have less disability than non-runners. In this study, they took people age 50 and above (running club members and non-members) and followed them for 20+ years.

The good news here is that long-term exercise can impact your longevity and help create healthy aging for you. If running is not your thing, find something else to try. Whatever you do, find an exercise (or lots of exercises) that you can do several times a week.

Now, get running and help your body age well!
