Anti-Aging Tip: Ginkgo May Prevent Stroke Damage

Monday October 13, 2008
A new study in mice shows that mice who suffered a stroke conducted at Johns Hopkins showed that mice taking a daily dose of ginkgo had less, or even no, brain damage after a stroke.

Researchers gave mice a daily dose of ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) a laboratory-quality extract of ginkgo daily to normal mice and genetically altered test mice for seven days. They then created a stroke in the mice (it is really a bummer to be a lab mouse). The mice on the ginkgo extract had half the disability of the control mice and half the brain damage.

It is still too early to fully recommend a ginkgo supplement to people at high risk for stroke, but this is promising research. If you choose ginkgo, be sure that you use a high quality product (there are lots of ginkgo products, but some lack good quality control). Stick with name brands if you are not sure.
