Surf for Brain Health

Thursday October 30, 2008
Surfing the internet is good for your brain. The process of searching for information on the internet engages the brain more than simply reading a book. This makes sense to me. Once you start reading, there aren't really many decisions that you make (keep reading or not). But the internet offers constant decisions and choices. The brain must evaluate ads, links and other information and decide what to do.

So if you want a little brain exercise, surf the internet more - but you have to be looking for something specific. Go on an internet scavenger hunt for obscure facts and information and your brain will get a workout.

I agree and I think that this is especially helpful for older folks. I know that my grandmother, who is eighty, works the internet like a pro and it makes her more spry, plus it allows her to feel connected to family, friends, and others who share her interests–and I think this is something that older folks really need.
