Work is Bad For Your Heart

Thursday November 6, 2008
When people don't have control over their workplace, their risk of heart attack increases. People with the least control over what they do day-to-day at work are 1.8 more times more likely to have a heart attack than people with control, according to Finnish researchers.

What seems to be happening is that not having control over one's environment causes a low-grade but constant stress. This has been seen in mice in the laboratory. Over time, that stress causes harmful hormones to be released and eventually damage tissues and organs in the body, leading to inflammation and heart attacks.

If you can't get more control in your workplace, then you need to learna  relaxation method to prevent work from impacting your heart. Try the relaxation response, a method proven to improve health and reduce the risk of many diseases.

What’s the Finnish study? I’m writing a blog and book-in-progress on people over 80 in the workforce, so I’m interested in all current research.
