Alzheimer's and Lifestlye - Is There a Link?

Tuesday November 18, 2008
Alzheimer's disease is still largely a mystery. There is no solid way to prevent or even delay Alzheimer's despite the efforts of researchers. However, some good news is that lifestyle factors are beginning to give clues about Alzheimer's disease.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some new areas are emerging in the field of Alzheimer's disease prevention:

  • Improving heart health (through exercise and a healthy lifestyle) may prevent Alzheimer's disease.
  • Having a healthy diet that prevents diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other chronic illness may also prevent chronic illnesses of the brain (like Alzheimer's disease).
  • Alzheimer's disease vaccine is another form of prevention. This is still in the early stages of development.
  • Statins and other heart medications may also prevent Alzheimer's disease.
  • Mental fitness activities, such as puzzles, could reduce risk.
But all these possibilities are still being explored. Some may show promise and others will not. Your best course it to eat healthy, exercise, work your brain and keep an eye on the research.
