Nursing Homes Get Rated - and Many Do Poorly

From Mark Stibich, Ph.D., About.com GuideDecember 22, 2008

The U.S. government finally came out with ratings of nursing homes and the news isn't good. There are about 16,000 nursing home in the U.S. and 22% received the lowest possible rating (only 12% received the highest rating).

The rating system basically gave nursing homes 1 to 5 stars and was done by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Non-profit nursing homes were rated higher than for-profit homes on average. Of course, the nursing home industry is complaining about the system used to rate and the oversimplification of using just a 5 star system.

You can view the ratings for Nursing Homes on the Health and Human Services website: Nursing Home Compare.
