George Francis was born in 1896 and was 112 years old when he died on December 28, 2008. He is survived by his son, Anthony Francis (age 81) from heart failure. He lived in three centuries (19th, 20th and 21st).

According to LA Times, Francis barely weighed more than 100 pounds throughout his life. He was born in New Orleans on June 6, 1896 and spent much of his life facing the oppression of the South as an African American man. He was an amatuer boxer, chauffeur, auto mechanic and a barber throughout his life. He lost his wife in 1964 from cancer and has a son and three daughters. He had 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

The new oldest living man in the U.S. becomes Walter Breuning of Montana (at 112 years and 98 days). Gertrude Baines of Los Angles holds the title of the United States' oldest living person at age 114. She is almost two years shy of the title of world's oldest living person. Maria de Jesus of Portugal is 115 years and 109 days old. The world's oldest living man is Tomoji Tanabe of Japan at 113 years and 101 days.
