Q&A: What vitamins should I take?

From Mark Stibich, Ph.D., About.com Guide   December 30, 2008

Q: What vitamins should I take?

A: That’s a tough question that depends on a few factors. Let's look at each factor below:

1. Your Diet: Hopefully you eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every day. That is the best source of vitamins. For most people, if they eat enough fruits and vegetables, there is no need for extra vitamins. (Remember, as soon as butter, cheese or cream touches a vegetable, it no longer counts). So put your effort (and money) into adding fruits and vegetables. Of course, if you can't (or won't) eat them, then a multi-vitamin may make sense.

2. Medications: Some medication can deplete certain vitamins and minerals. If you are on any long-term medications, ask your doctor if you should take a supplement.

3. Age and Gender: As your bones age, they may need some extra calcium to stay strong (especially for women). It is good to get as much calcium from natural sources as you can, but a supplement is a pretty good idea. Ask your doctor about these supplements.

So my overall answer is "eat your fruits and vegetables"? and "ask your doctor"?. I know that those are not very satisfying answers, but the simple fact is that so many of the vitamins and minerals on the market are the wrong formula and simply don't get into your bloodstream. Focus on eating good food and addressing specific issues (like medications or aging) with your doctor.

Must Read: Add 2 veggies or fruits every day.
