Q&A: How can I keep from getting sick this winter?

Q: How can I keep from getting sick this winter?

A: As flu season revs up, avoiding illness becomes more challenging. Here are a few simple things to do to lower your risk of illness this winter:

  1. Don't Touch Your Face. The bugs that you pick up on your hands can only get into your body through an opening (mouth, eyes, nose). The average adult touches her face about 6-9 times every hour. Practice not brining your hands to your face at all.
  2. Wash Your Hands. Of course washing your hands is a god idea. Be sure to wash them long enough (sing "Happy Birthday"? twice, preferably to yourself). Be sure to be vigorous, a lot of the washing benefit comes from the physical removal of germs.
  3. Eat With Clean Hands. It seems obvious, but almost everyone grabs a snack, some nuts or even lunch without washing hands first.
  4. Keep Your Immune System Health. Finally, keep your immune system running well by getting enough sleep (7-9 hours a night), eating lots of fruits and vegetables, not being stressed and exercise at least 3 times a week.

Another great way of keeping the immune system revved up is by incorporating ginger, garlic, and cayenne into the diet and supplementing with astragalus which is tonifying and can be used for a longer amount of time than echinacea.
