Weight Lifting a Bust for 80 Year Olds?

By April 2, 2009

Follow me on:

If you are 80 and lift weights, does it do any good. Not much according to a new study published in the Journal of Applied Physiological. Researchers asked 6 80+ year old women to lift weights for three times a week for three months. At the end of the study, they compared with seniors' muslce mass with what it was before the study and (here's the bad news) there was no change.

Researchers focused on the thigh muscle and used an MRI to measure its size in the women before and after the weight lifting. There is some good news - the 80+ year old ladies were able to lift 26% more after three months of training. This is probably because the nervous system got more effective in how the nervous system "ordered" the muscles to work.

So, bottom line, no gain in muscle mass; but from a purely functional point-of-view, a 26% gain in lifting ability.
