Stevia Sweeteners - Are They Safe?

Stevia is a plant that has sweet leaves and has been used to sweeten the drinks of people in South America for centuries, not only that -- stevia has no calories. . . if only the story of stevia cold be that simple. It would be so good to have a natural zero calorie sweetener; but instead we have a bit of a clouded picture around stevia.

The FDA banned stevia in foods in the late 80s because of controversial research that indicated a possibility of stevia causing cancer (stevia was allowed as a supplement). In 2009, Cargill developed a stevia derived sweetener that bypassed the suspect compounds in stevia by using a purifed process and selecting only certain parts of the stevia plants. Now, stevia is showing up everywhere as a sweetener.
