Sepsis, often referred to as "blood poisoning," means that the entire body is experiencing an inflammatory response to an infection.
This is an EXTREMELY dangerous condition in anyone, however, elderly people are at much higher risk and much more likely to die from sepsis.
The symptoms of sepsis include a rapid heartbeat, fever or low body temperature, and rapid breathing. If any of these symptoms are present in an older person who has just had an infection (or may have had one), an operation or an invasive procedure, call the doctor immediately.
