Guide Review - Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr - Book Review

Twenty years ago, 23 men and women came to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., out of desperation. They had just had a heart attack and were told that things didn't look good. Dr. Esselstyn, a cardiac surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, began a 20-year experiment that has kept almost all 23 patients alive and happy.

The idea is simple -- make someone "heart-attack proof" by keeping their cholesterol below 150. Dr. Esselstyn does this through a strict vegetarian diet with no dairy, no nuts and no oils. The diet may sound extreme, but he has documented that this can not only stop heart disease from getting worse, it can actually reverse heart disease in severely ill patients.

The book covers the story of those patients, the changes they made and the data that proves their hearts have healed and become healthier. Dr. Esselstyn also provides a host of tips, recipes and suggestions for eating well on his diet.

My Life Might be SAVED!, Member GranJudi

My response to this book is WOW! I have been slowly getting to this diet without knowing it. For two years, I have been aware of what I was eating, and trying to eat the best foods recommended to reduce my cholesterol without taking drugs. However, I made sure I was consuming my quart of milk a day and eating pro-biotic yogurt. WRONG! I had already given up meats; I was familiar with a vegetarian diet because of my daughter and son-in-law; I was taking Red Yeast Rice-Niacin-CoQ10; I included whole grains into my diet and many fruits and vegetables; I eliminated 'refined' flour and sugar. Following the guidelines in this book was easier for me than it might be for most people. The recipes are great. When you realize that your life is at stake, and can eliminate anything that is definitely harming you, it is easier to make the transition. Yes, Esselstyn -- along with Caldwell and Ornish -- just might save the world -- at least from heart attacks and coronary artery disease. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
