Isolated Systolic Hypertension

Isolated systolic hypertension most often occurs in the elderly and is caused by the hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Because the arteries are harder, they do not expand as much when the heart pumps. This hardening leads to an elevation of the systolic blood pressure with the diastolic pressure remaining normal. In people over the age of 65 with high blood pressure, about 70% have this type.

Labile Hypertension

Some people’s blood pressure changes often and repeatedly due. These people can have high blood pressure due to emotional stress. Symptoms may include headaches and ringing in the ears. Treatment using blood pressure medication isn’t always effective. Doctors sometime prescribe anti-anxiety medications instead. People going through stressful situations should monitor their blood pressure in case stress-induced high blood pressure develops.

Loop Diuretics

Loop diuretics are usually the second type of diuretic medications given to people with high blood pressure.

Malignant Hypertension

Malignant hypertension is rare but very serious. Blood pressure levels can rise very quickly. There is a danger of stroke and usually the person has severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or even seizures. This type of high blood pressure calls for immediate hospitalization.

Potassium Sparing Diuretics

These diuretics also help the body retain potassium which helps to manage high blood pressure.

Secondary Hypertension

Secondary high blood pressure is caused by another health condition. Damaged kidney tissue (most common), certain tumors, thyroid problems and other conditions can cause high blood pressure. Once first medical condition is treated, the blood pressure usually returns to normal.

Thiazides are a type of diuretic, which is often the first type of medication given to people with high blood pressure.

White Coat Hypertension
