The Bottom Line

When I first saw this calculator, I recognized the picture of Thomas Perls, who is the "author" of the Living to 100 longevity calculator. The EONS longevity calculator is the same one. I decided to test it anyway, hoping that the EONS folks would have found some way to bring in more information and suggestions. The results of the test were the same, and the extra information was disappointing.

Pros

  • well-designed and easy-to-use
  • lots of community information and resources available
  • doesn't ask for your e-mail address

Cons

  • too many ads
  • results page not very helpful
  • not very many links for additional information

Description

  • A five-minute longevity test with straightforward questions.
  • A results page that calculates how certain behaviors can add years to your life.
  • Links into a social networking site that is targeting Boomers.

Guide Review - EONS Longevity Calculator Review

I had my friend take this longevity test, even though it is the exact same test as the Living to 100 longevity calculator. Predictably, the results were the same: he received a life expectancy calculation of 84 years with the possibility of adding 12.5 extra years if certain behaviors were followed.

We had been hoping that the EONS folks would have added some additional resources and suggestions at the end of the calculator. They did not add much. There seemed to be an extra page explaining each of the major sections. Some of the information there was good, but it did not really help much.

The recommendations my friend received were the same (except everything under a year was noted in months): exercise more for 5 more years, take a daily aspirin for 2 more years, cut back one day of work for 2 more years, floss daily for 1 more year and several other suggestions.

We were disappointed with the suggestions. The goal seemed to be to get the user to join the EONS social networking site and create blogs, participate in forums, etc. If you are looking for a group of people to talk with about growing older, perhaps this is the website for you. The website is trying to create a place for older adults on the web. Check it out and let me know what you think.
