Brain fitness is becoming a huge market. In 2007, there were $225 million in sales from the brain fitness industry, according to a report from Posit Science (a brain fitness company). That’s a 50% growth over the year before.

Baby Boomers Love Brain Fitness

As the population ages, the idea of taking action to control your brain health has a huge appeal to baby boomers and others. In 2004, there were just 27 news articles written about brain fitness while in 2008 there were over 1300 news articles. The basic philosophy behind most of the brain fitness ideas is, simply, “use it or lose it.” There are a wide variety of brain fitness programs and approaches, all with different levels of proof.

You can start with website and games for brain fitness, or explore some other approaches to brain fitness[/link"> (such as learning new skills). You can even volunteer for some brain fitness benefits. The key is to challenge yourself and your brain.

Does Brain Fitness Really Work?

Well, hard to say. There is no doubt that if you play a brain fitness game daily, you will improve in the abilities needed for that game. There is also evidence that the education you have, the lower your risk of dementia. However, the field of brain fitness is just too new to have long term results from many of the approaches to brain fitness that are out there. Therefore, we can’t really say that playing games, doing crosswords and participating in brain fitness programs will definitely make a difference. That said, there is certainly little chance of harm in these games and your mental abilities will improve.
