The best way to find a local sleep center is to go to Sleepcenters.org, a website maintained by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that provides information about accredited sleep centers by state and city.
For a directory of sleep experts, try searching at the American Board of Sleep Medicine for a listing of people who have been certified in sleep medicine.
You may want to find a sleep medicine specialist if you:
- Usually take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep at night.
- Wake up several times a night and cannot fall back asleep quickly.
- People complain about your loud snoring.
- People notice that you occasionally stop breathing or appear to choke in your sleep.
- You have high blood pressure that is difficult to control with medications.
- Take frequent naps.
- You are overweight and feel tired during the day.
- Fall asleep at inappropriate times.
